Temperament with Children
According to the AKC, or American Kennel Club, the Australian Shepherd falls into the category of herding dogs. Most herding dogs are loyal, affectionate, and generally make excellent companions for families with children. This is the case for the Australian Shepherd. Like all herding dogs, the Aussie should be socialized with children as a puppy in order for the children to understand the personality traits of the breed, as well as for the puppy to get used to being around children.
Another characteristic of the Australian Shepherd is their intelligence. They are easy to train and attentive which is what make them great pets.
As members of the herding family, Australian Shepherds are very active and require a great amount of daily exercise. This however, can be great for children who are seeking a friend since Aussie's love to play.
